A decade of shared progress. A future of shared prosperity.

COSCO SHIPPING’s acquisition and operation of the Port of Piraeus stands as a flagship project of China-Greece cooperation under the Belt and Road Initiative. The project has strengthened the China-Greece Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, deepened trade and economic connectivity between the two countries, and fostered greater mutual understanding between their peoples and civilizations. Today, the port serves as a key node in the sea-land corridor connecting China and Europe.

From a traditional port to a Mediterranean maritime hub, the story of COSCO SHIPPING’s Port of Piraeus continues to unfold.

🏛️ On the afternoon of October 7, the Tsinghua University PBC School of Finance Belt and Road Initiative EMBA (BRI EMBA) delegation visited the Port of Piraeus as part of its Greece module. Led by and learning under the guidance of Dean Jiao Jie, students took part in an immersive, on-site lesson exploring the global maritime economy.

🤝 Mr. Qu Shengbin, Vice President and Deputy Chief Executive Officer of Piraeus Port Authority S.A., warmly welcomed Dean Jiao Jie and the BRI EMBA delegation, sharing insights into the port’s development and operations. Since assuming full operational control on August 10, 2016, COSCO SHIPPING has spent a decade transforming the port. Container throughput has grown substantially, propelling Piraeus into the world’s top 25 container ports and making it the fourth-largest container port in Europe.

🗺️ At a scale model of the port, students explored the layout and development plans for its various operational zones. They then toured the port by bus, taking in container vessels, giant cruise ships, ferries, and roll-on/roll-off (Ro-Ro) car carriers sharing the same harbor. The visit offered a vivid illustration of Piraeus’s scale and its role as a diversified maritime hub in the Mediterranean.

✨ Learning beyond the boundaries of finance. On the shores of the Aegean Sea, students witnessed first-hand how the principles of consultation, joint contribution, and shared benefits can translate a vision of international cooperation into tangible economic development.
