BRI EMBA Program held 11th module in Hong Kong

Class 2017 of the BRI EMBA Program at the PBC School of Finance (PBCSF), Tsinghua University held its 11th module in Hong Kong from January 9th to January 13th, 2019. Class participants visited SenseTime, a top Chinese AI company, Television Broadcasts Limited (TVB) and Hong Kong Exchange, and held a joint forum with HK Finance EMBA Alumni Association. Participants also took the lectures of “Financial Laws in HK and China” and “Asset Securitization”.


In SenseTime, Mr. Shang Hailong, the Managing Director of SenseTime Hong Kong briefly introduced the company. He metioned that SenseTime is the 5th national AI platform in China (along with Baidu, Alibaba Cloud, Tencent and iFLYTEK). The Company is the world’s most valuable artificial intelligence (AI) unicorn and the largest pure-play AI company which is focused on computer vision and deep learning. The Companies’ valuation has exceeded 6 billion USD.

At TVB, S K Cheong, the Executive Director & General Manager delivered a speech. Mr. Cheong mentioned that TVB has its unique strengths in its large vertically integrated TV production capability and strong brand name. It also faces challenges in its limited market size and the emergence of platform-based media. Market recognition and reputation are keys to future success of TVB.

Television Broadcasts Limited, commonly known as TVB, is the first wireless commercial television station in Hong Kong. It was first established on 19 November 1967. Over the years, TVB has developed a production pipeline which generates an annual output of about 700 hours of dramas and 23,000 hours of infotainment programs such as news, current affairs, variety and travelogue.

Ba Shusong, Chief Economist of Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing Limited (HKEX) welcomed students. He introduced the history of HKEX and HK Museum of Finance. Mr. Ba is also the thesis advisor of Finance EMBA of PBCSF.

Delegates from Chief China Economist's Office, Projects Management and Fixed Income Departments gave speeches on HK Capital Market, HKEX connect projects and FIC products .

HKEX is the largest offshore listing venue for Mainland Chinese issuers – HK$6 trillion raised since fist H-share in 1993.

The Class held a joint forum with PBCSF Finance EMBA Alumni Association of HK. Ms. Wu Shuqing, Chairman of Beijing Air Catering Ltd, Mr. Lei Qiguang, Executive Director of SEC HK, and Ms. E Zhihuan, Chief Economist of BOC HK delivered key note speeches. Participants had a panel discussion session on Hongkong’s strategic position and investment opportunities during the dinner afterwards.

During the class, Huang Hui, professor of Law in the Faculty of Law Chinese University of Hong Kong shared his view on financial laws in Hong Kong and China. He especially highlighted concepts of WVR and misstatement liabilities.

Guo Jiequn, Deputy Director of the Monetary Policy and Financial Stability Research Center, Tsinghua University, delivered a lecture on Asset Securitization, sharing most recent cases studies in China and aboard.

The class of 2017 has already finished 10 modules of study, among which 5 modules were held in Beijing and the rest in Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, and Thailand. During their course of study, students visited national financial institutions, including Industrial and Commercial Bank of China, China Development Bank, Government of Singapore Investment(GIC), Singapore Exchange (SGX), Temasek Holdings, the Bank of Thailand, and etc., leading enterprises, such as China Fortune Land Development (CFLD) , CIMB, YTL Group, PT Bank Central Asia (BCA), The Charoen Pokphand Group, and etc., and top unicorn companies such as Tokopedia and GO-JEK.
